Breeding Stock Sale marches on with buoyant Day 2

An ebullient sales ring populated with breeders from all around Europe as well as America, Australia or Japan saw the figures on the second day of the Breeding Stock Sale post impressive gains from the same session a year ago. The aggregate for the 204 horses to change hands was €7,040,500 representing a 32% hike, while the average price of €34,512 increased by 30%. The clearance rate of 78% was also up 4.5 points from 2018. 11 fillies, mares and foals reached or exceeded the six figure mark, a feat only achieved by 4 individuals last year.

CITATION ONE for Blackstone Farm

Buyers gathered around the ring for CITATION ONE (lot 352), a daughter of Oasis Dream in foal to Mastercraftsman from Coulonces Sales. Bidding from the restaurant, it was the American Christian Black (Blackstone Farm) that went to €200,000 to secure the daughter of dual Listed winner CHANTRA, also a half-sister to Group winner CALYXA. « We’ll bring her over to the States and she’ll probably go to Justify next year », said Black. « She has a great German pedigree and is a very nice mare with lots of charisma. We’re delighted to have her. »

There was a notably relentless apetite for foals, with the 66 heads to sell commanding €38,288 on average, up 38%.

Wootton Bassett foals in high demand

Leading vendors during yesterday’s session, Haras d’Etreham was at the fore again on Sunday courtesy of two of their flagship sires. Wootton Bassett was represented by a pair of six-figure fillies headed by a granddaughter of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr.1) winner SPAIN (lot 411) who topped the foal category when falling to Philipp Von Stauffenberg for €190,000. The La Motteraye Consignment offering is a half-sister to this season’s Listed winning juvenile LADY GALORE. « She’s a very nice filly, and a half-sister to a Stakes winner, said Stauffenberg. She’ll be re-sold next year ».

Offered from Haras de Grandcamp, lot 239 sold for €140,000 to Hubert Guy. The filly hails from the close family of Group 1 winners PRIDE and SPECIOSA. Guy said: « She has everything that we are looking for: she’s well made, has a great pedigree and moves well. I’ve bought her for a group of friends and partners including Lavinia Fabre, Louis Baudron and Gaël Lhermite in view to reselling her next year. »

Almanzor proving red hot commodity

No less than three foals from the first crop of European Champion Almanzor commanded six figure price tags, having been conceived off a €35,000 stud fee. Sold by La Motteraye Consignment, lot 241 is out of a half-sister to multiple Group winner SEA CALISI and was knocked down to Charles Briere of Fairway Partners for €125,000. « She was the filly of the sale for me, he commented. She walks very well and Almanzor appears to produce well. She’ll go through the ring again next year ».

Later in the evening, a colt (lot 499) from the same draft from the family of MY KINGDOM OF FIFE went the way of Peter Kelly on a final bid of €105,000. He too will be aimed for resell. A filly from Haras d’Etreham (lot 513) commanded €100,000 from American purchaser Flamingo Bloodstock. She is the first foal out of the unraced Pivotal mare QUARA, from the family of Gr.1 winner MILLE ET MILLE.

MOTIVATION makes €160,000

The vendors of yesterday’s top price FRANKEL LIGHT, Haras du Mezeray also offered MOTIVATION (lot 422), a daughter of Muhtathir from the family of several top-level winners including BLUSH WITH PRIDE, PEEPING FAWN and AVIANCE. Up against Tomas Janda, Michel Zerolo (Oceanic Bloodstock) had the final say at €160,000 for this black-type mare in foal to Wootton Bassett. She is already the dam of this year’s Gr.1 Belmont Derby Invitational 3rd ROCKEMPEROR. « She’s a young mare in-foal to a very good stallion that has already produced a Group 1 performer, said the agent. For the rest, you only need to read her catalogue page! »

VADARIYA for Jeremy Brummitt

The dam of a Dark Angel foal sold for €135,000 yesterday to Antoine Bellanger’s new entity Arcadia Elevage, VADARIYA (lot 283) was knocked down for €180,000. Part of the dispersal from the Marquesa de Moratalla, the daughter of Sea The Stars from The Channel Consignment was sold to Jeremy Brummitt. She is a daughter of dual Group winner VADAPOLINA, from the well-known Aga Khan family of VADAWINA.

« I’ve bought her for an existing client, said the agent. I was beaten on one of her progeny before, so it was a good occasion to buy the dam today! »

OCEANIE to join Capucines roster

As a 9-year-old daughter of Dansili and already a Group producer with her second foal, OCEANIE (lot 498) was never going to be short of admirers and it took Eric Puerari a final bid of €115,000 to take her home. A half-sister to the Gr.2 winner WATAR, she is the dam of on this year’s Gr.3 Preis der Winterkönigin winner OCEAN FANTASY, one of the best juvenile fillies in Germany. She was offered in foal to Cloth of Stars from the draft of Haras du Mézeray.

FOREVER YOURS heading to Japan

Black-type placed when third in the Prix du Grand Camp (L.) since the catalogue was printed, FOREVER YOURS (lot 387) caught the attention of Laurent Benoit, who had the final say at €105,000. A seven-time winner, the Stéphane Wattel trained filly is notably from the family of dual Group winner CUT QUARTZ. « She’s Listed placed by Motivator, a good broodmare sire, commented the agent. She’ll go to stud, possibly in Japan ».

NAMIBIE heading to Ireland

Crispin de Moubray was all smiles after the young mare NAMIBIE (lot 463) was knocked down to him for €100,000. Offered from La Motteraye Consignment, the daughter of Dark Angel is out of Listed winning juvenile MAMBIA from the family of PHOCEENE and OLENDON. She was sold in-foal to Le Havre. “I’m so happy to have got her as she was my pick of the day and I wasn’t sure she was in my budget, Moubray said. Mambia is now in Japan and her progeny are running well – her three-year-old was fourth in a Group race this year. It’s a very current family. She’ll go to Ireland.”
