Kodiac Filly Tops Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale

A filly by KODIAC was the star turn on the one-day Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale as the combined clearance rate improved significantly to 86%.

Lot 293: Kodiac Filly to Dance for 150,000 Guineas

Daniel Creighton, from Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock secured the top lot for the day when securing the KODIAC filly out of PEACE PALACE for 150,000 guineas on behalf of owner John Dance.

"We thought she was the nicest filly in the sale today," said Creighton. "She is by Kodiac, has a good pedigree and did a very professional breeze. She shouldn't be too long and should be ready to run soon."

The daughter of the ARCHIPENKO mare PEACE PALACE was a 60,000 euro foal purchase by Highbank Stud, but she failed to sell on as a yearling.

"It sometimes happens, you have to be patient," said Martin Wainwright of Highbank Stud. "We really liked her and believed in her and it has paid off today.

"She breezed well and did a good time - we'd have been upset if we had not got a price like this today and we might have been tempted to keep and race her."

Consignor Mark Dwyer said: "She came to me from the yearling sales to be broken then went back to the Highbank, returning in January.

"She has been a pleasure to deal with throughout, a natural – she is one who could be on target for June."

Lot 309: Blandford Strike for Sepoy Filly

Late in the evening the SEPOY filly out of the EXCEED AND EXCEL mare RHYTHM EXCEL became the second highest price for the sale when being knocked down for 95,000 guineas to Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown.

"She is a very strong filly and did an exceptional breeze," said Brown. "She is going into training with Richard Hughes."

The filly, who is out a sister REWARDING HERO, second in the Group 1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong, was consigned to the sale by Mark and Paula Flannery’s Egmont Stud.

"She has been straightforward throughout, and has been very busy here," reported the Flannerys.

Lot 281: Elliot Strikes for Mukhadram Filly

Bloodstock agent Alex Elliot struck late in the day to secure the MUKHADRAM half-sister to the Grade 3 winner QARAABA for 75,000 guineas. Consigned from Mick Murphy’s Longways Stables, the daughter of the UNFUWAIN mare MOKARABA was purchased on behalf of Geoff Turnbull’s Elwick Stud.

"I really like this filly," said Elliott. "She did an extremely good breeze for a big filly who will be a backend two-year-old and more of a three-year-old type.

"I was in the US when Simon Callaghan trained Qaraaba, and he really felt she could have been a Group 1 filly. She has already produced a stakes horse, who has been a Group 1 third, and it is a pedigree that could start to grow.

"She has been bought with broodmare possibilities and could be one for Elwick's Mondaliste further down the line. This filly will probably have a break now and then head to a northern-based trainer."

Lot 286: Lope De Vega Colt to Highflyer/King

Highflyer Bloodstock’s Anthony Bromley and trainer Alan King have been great supporters of the Guineas Breeze Up & Horses in Training Sale and the pair struck a few lots later to secure the LOPE DE VEGA colt out of the Listed-placed MYRICA for 75,000 guineas.

"We were waiting to buy this horse - and I am relieved that it has worked out, we really wanted him," said Bromley. "He is by Lope De Vega, who is a top sire, and he is lovely big strong horse from a very good hotel. I bought Severance off the consignors last year- he is training with Mick Channon, won at Haydock and and goes for the Chester Vase next week."

The LOPE DE VEGA colt was bought as a yearling at Tattersalls by Willie and Brian Slattery of Meadowlands Stud for just 10,000 guineas.

"He was the very last lot in the ring through Book 2 on day three," said Slattery, whose patience was well rewarded today. "We loved him, he has been so straightforward and are delighted with this sale."

Lot 72: Executive Force Tops Horses in Training Section

The Horses in Training section of the Guineas Sale was topped by the five-year-old gelding EXECUTIVE FORCE who was knocked down to former jockey Ted Durcan for 65,000 guineas. Consigned by Michael Wigham’s Hamilton Stables, EXECUTIVE FORCE is officially rated 97 having won six races already this year.

"He is going to Saudi Arabia," explained Durcan. "He is probably exposed now here, but there will be lots of options for him in the Middle East. It is the off-season now, so he will have a break ahead of the autumn campaign. He is a sound, capable horse and should be fun."

Chairman's Statement

At the conclusion of the 2019 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“An abundance of overseas buyers from throughout Europe and the Gulf region, a significantly improved clearance rate of 86% and a record turnover for the Horses in Training section of the fixture are all positives to take from the year’s renewal of the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale. Buyers from Italy, Greece, Poland, Scandinavia and Spain, as well as a strong contingent of buyers from Dubai, Kuwait and Qatar, have all contributed to a clearance rate that has only been bettered once since 2012, but the sector of the market that has not matched recent renewals is the top end and the decline in average and turnover reflects this aspect of the sale. As ever there have been some very pleasing pinhooking successes, but overall there has been a shortage of highlights and domestic buyers have been a little restrained in comparison with the sustained overseas demand.

“The horses in training section of the sale continues to be popular and turnover just shy of a million is a new high, as is the median and the 90% clearance rate which again demonstrates the enduring appeal of sales of this nature at Tattersalls. We will continue to work on attracting quality lots to this fixture, both Breeze Up two-year-olds and horses in training, and look forward to seeing plenty of racecourse success from the sale throughout 2019."
