Record Turnover at Tattersalls October Book 3

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came to a close with a daughter of GARSWOOD headlining proceedings at 48,000 guineas. The final session saw a total of 68 lots sell for 790,200 guineas, taking the three day Book 3 totals to 7,839,450 guineas for the 473 lots sold, a new record for the fixture. The average over the three days of the sale was 16,574 guineas whilst the median was 11,000 guineas. The two weeks of yearling sales at Tattersalls comprising Books 1, 2 and 3 of the October Yearling Sale saw turnover of 158,151,450 guineas, up 19% on last year’s record.

The top price on the final day of the October 3 sale was lot 1930, the GARSWOOD filly out of the DARK ANGEL mare DORA’S SISTER. Consigned by Richard Kent’s Mickley Stud on behalf of Dalwhinnie Bloodstock, the filly was knocked down to trainer Mick Quinn for 48,000 guineas.

"She has been bought for my main owner Kenneth Bruce," said Quinn. "We wanted a nice filly and we'd hope she will be back in the spring to run at the Craven meeting."

"It is a group of three of us," said consignor Kent. "One has a childrens' nursery and the other produces colours for plastics. We got together to race Radio Gaga [Listed winner] and we've been friends since.

"We bought this mare privately from trainer John Quinn. Her first foal died, but Peggy's Angel, who we kept, is good and has chances of Listed form this afternoon, and this Garswood is a very special filly.

"I have two Dark Angel mares at home - Dora's Angel and Blanc De Chine, she is the dam of Havana Grey.

"We chose Garswood because of his speed, and he was good value. The mare had a Hot Streak filly foal this year and went to Brazen Beau."

At the conclusion of the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“There have been records broken, and extraordinary highlights over the past two weeks of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, but it is appropriate at this point to express our gratitude to the huge number of people who have all made a contribution to Europe’s premier yearling sale.

“There is an awful lot of hard work and dedication which goes into producing yearlings for sale at any level of the market and it is a source of pride that so many breeders from throughout Britain, Ireland and further afield, make the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale their preferred choice. The quality of the stock offered at any sale is the key to attracting the buyers and to have seen so many new faces suggests not only that the global appetite for quality European bloodstock remains strong, but that the buyers recognise the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale as the premier source of Europe’s finest yearlings.

“In total nearly 160 million guineas has been spent at this year’s October Yearling Sale; more than double the figure of as recently as 2011. The once in a generation Ballymacoll Dispersal made a wonderful start in a record breaking Book 1, the 4 million guineas Book 1 sale topper was the highest priced yearling to be sold anywhere in the world this year, October Book 2 broke records across the board including a new individual high of 850,000 guineas, and Book 3 has also achieved record turnover and sustained international participation. There have been distractions this week, but all of the above suggests that there is so much to be proud of in the Bloodstock industry and we will continue to work tirelessly to maintain the very highest standards which have made the Tattersalls name synonymous with bloodstock sales and integrity for the past 251 years."
